Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the effect of blending different types of alcohols, including methanol, isopropanol, and 2-methyl-2-propanol with ethanol, the common alcohol in the SO2-alcohol-water (SAW) process. The percentage of blending each of the three mentioned alcohols with ethanol at levels of 0, 5, 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100% was considered. In this study, Pinus eldarica wood was used for pulping operations. According to the results, the coefficients of linear regression between the kappa number and residual lignin in the pulp related to fractionation with ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, and 2-methyl-2-propanol were 0.153, 0.151, 0.151, and 0.148, respectively. With an increase in the percentage of methanol (from 0 to 100 w/w%) in the blend with ethanol, the amount of residual lignin and the overall pulp yield (without any rejects) increased. Based on the selectivity results, adding 5 to 10% of each of the three alcohols under study instead of an equivalent weight of ethanol will result in different properties of the pulp. Adding this amount of methanol increases the pulp yield along with an increase in its lignin content. Adding this amount of 2-methyl-2-propanol reduces the pulp yield along with an increase in its lignin content, and adding this amount of isopropanol reduces the amount of pulp lignin along with a decrease in its yield. In general, the results of this study showed that it is possible to use methanol and isopropanol alcohols in pure form or in combination with ethanol in the SAW process.
